Note Taking in College
Note Taking in College While I was an âA+ studentâ in high school, I never found it necessary to take many notes to succeed. Sometimes in high school, teachers print out slides or give you the lecture material after class. While this still does happen occasionally in 100-level classes, youâll be hard-pressed to find it when you start taking more difficult classes. This necessitates learning how to take notes on your own â" fast. Computer or Hand-Written? While I can see the value of tech in the classroom, Im not a fan of online note-taking. Often on a computer, I get caught up in trying to type what a professor says verbatim. When Iâm writing by hand, I have to quickly synthesize the information in my head before writing it down. This leads to far better comprehension, and Iâm not distracted by the 40 email notifications I get in an hour. If you get distracted easily, a computer might not be the way for you to go. Tools Your note-taking style will likely change throughout your time here as you adapt to different classrooms and professors. Each person has a different preference for note-taking, whether its with brand-new colored pens or a used-up Bic. I choose to keep a binder instead of a notebook. I used to write in notebooks, but Iâve found that binders are far more efficient. Im able to take out specific pages at a time and insert in-class activities next to the notes that they refer to. This is helpful when Iâm reviewing, as I can see examples of the analyses I might be asked to do on the test! Like I said, everyone does this differently, but I wanted to give you a quick overview of what my note-taking process looks like! Pre-Exam This is a page from my notes on CMN 345: Visual Media Effects. My system for this class is a dashed line (-) to denote something that is written on a slide, and a plus sign (+) to denote my own summary of what a professor says. Later on, this helps me compare notes to other students. My interpretation of what the professor said might vary from theirs, and while I never make mistakes (ha ha), Iâm always interested in different understandings of the material. Post-Exam This is a page from my notes on CMN 368: Sexual Communication after our first exam. This gets into a little bit of my study habits, but that ties right into note-taking. Its been typical in my communication classes to get a study guide before the first exam that has a list of all the topics that will be on the exam. The best way for me to study is to go through my notes and readings and make a document of everything I know about each topic. I will then print that document and color-code it according to each subject. Once Im finished, Ill do the same in my original notes. The color-coordination per subject and the amount of times I go over the material help it stick better. It also makes me think about whether or not I have a comprehensive understanding of the material. My note-taking style has changed a lot throughout the years, and still changes slightly from class to class. How I take notes depends heavily on the professor, but I almost always stick to hand-written. Professors rarely put a lot of text on the slide, so youâre mostly relying on what they say. Alex Class of 2020 After switching majors four times, I've finally fallen in love with what I'm studying: communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I hope hearing about my experiences can put all your worries at ease, because college really isn't as scary as you might think!

Little White Lies Essay - 2055 Words
Many people in the world are pretenders and liars. Even in the early stages of life many children pretend to be a distinguishable figure. Whether it is a princess or a superhero, these children create false images of themselves to feel important or confident. Although everyone has his or her own reason for doing such a thing, many do it for their own personal gain. Countless amounts of people can relate to this (including myself) because many have told lies or pretended to be something they are not multiple times in their lives. Even as adults, people still lie and pretend. Not only do they create false statements to build images for themselves, they create images in which they can look upon in a positive way. Whether it is to win overâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Without lies, each character would be alone and helpless in the world. Even though these novels seem to be similar in appearance with the common thread of lying, in reality they are quite different because each novel takes place in a distinctive time period. This exhibits the use of lying and pretending throughout history. Also, the result of the lies told varies from book to book. Some of the lies lead to happy endings; others lead to facing cruel reality and lastly some lead characters to come away with a better understanding in the world. In the end it comes down to analyzing what caused one to go down the path of lying and what intentions one expected to accomplish by lying. These characters have all told lies to escape the fear of being lonely. The little white lies told grow into incredibly messy situations and each character must face the consequences for their actions. Know the Difference between Being Smart, Intelligent and Educated
Are you smart? Are you educated? Or are you intelligent? Maybe, you are all three. Most people would consider these three different ways of asking the same question. Some people might read between the lines. And some might chastise you for making their head spin. Because even though terms like smart, intelligent, and educated can be spoken in the same vein and breath, the truth is that each one of them denotes a specific, separate meaning. How do you differentiate between terms which might mean the same thing, but are in essence, vastly differing in their interpretations? A mom tells her kids while they are growing up that they are smart. Sometimes she says they are intelligent. And as these kids go through the schools-college-university trifecta of learning, the mom might start throwing around the line that her kids are educated. Let us find out what mom meant when she said these words: Smart or Not? As people grow up, they are told that they are smart, but not as smart as they think. They might also end up hearing that some people seem smart, but in reality theyââ¬â¢re not. The kids in the hood possess ââ¬Ëstreet smartsââ¬â¢ whilst those with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge are pegged as ââ¬Ëbook smart.ââ¬â¢ Whatââ¬â¢s going on here? Really what do we mean when the term ââ¬Ësmartââ¬â¢ gets thrown about? Smart is when you react to a situation in the most perfect way that you can. Smart is learning to make the best of your circumstances. Smart is about being quick-witted and nimble footed. Smart is dressing sharply for the occasion. Smart is being best with different people around you. Smart is getting ahead in life. Smart is making the best use of either some or most of these attributes in an individual: Physical ââ¬â learning something b doing such as activities, pastimes, etc. In general, just by moving. Visual ââ¬â drawing, illustrating, making thoughts materialize on paper, board. By forming a clear picture in mind and getting that point across in reality by putting them down. Verbal ââ¬â getting ideas across to other people by reading and writing. Creative with words and phrasing. Being good with words generally. Interpersonal ââ¬â relating and responding well to other people around you. Striking up friendships and networking with people in all circles. Mediating between arguments, connecting with people as well as teams. Introspective ââ¬â preferring some time alone with their thoughts. Daydreaming and brainstorming about things around people. Reflective and thoughtful to explore their feelings about other people and subjects. Logical and Mathematical ââ¬â orderly, systematic, incisively logical about situations. Great at analyzing, planning calculating things. Musical artistic and quick about absorbing new melodies, tunes and lyrics to songs. Using music as a tool to learn. Has a sense for rhythm and timings. Focused on sounds and sonic. Educated or Not? Education is more about being well-versed in subjects of your studies. It is also about adopting a more civil demeanor. Itââ¬â¢s a process of learning where skills, knowledge and habits of people are transferred from generation to generation. All this is done through teaching, training and researching. Each person is unique and has their own set of favorite subjects and interests. Learning and acquiring knowledge about these subjects can expand oneââ¬â¢s mind to more possibilities. Education is not all about learning from books though, thereââ¬â¢s also an element of real life involved as well. Education gives individuals the means to explore the boundaries of their passion. Intelligent or Not? The simplest way to determine intelligence is to observe how an individual learns things. Does it take them long? Does it take numerous tries for them to grasp some important concepts, ideas, patterns, and so on? Does it take someone way too long to know whatââ¬â¢s happening around them? This sense of awareness and quick knowledge absorption ââ¬â are hallmarks of intelligence. A highly intelligent person will pick up more skills and knowledge in the same time as compared to the average person. Conclusion The next time you hear these three terms been thrown around, it would be a good idea to pinpoint the context behind it. Being smart is not the same thing as being educated yet a person can be educated without being smart or intelligent. At least now these terms should make sense to everyone.

The Yellow Wallpaper And The Fall Of The House Of Usher
Women have a profound role in not only the society, but in all facets of culture. Their impact can be seen/felt in music, fashion, and even literature. After reading the short stories from the last few weeks, it has become more apparent that women truly encompass a definite role as well in gothic fiction. As a result, this paper will seek to analyze and define the roles of women in two (2) prominent gothic fiction pieces: ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Edgar Allen Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usher.â⬠Many women in gothic fiction suffer from suppression primarily from men either those in their lives, or at the hands of dominant men in the society, who typically hold the power. Perkins-Gilmanââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Yellowâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Though the narrator hopes for a life absent of solitude, she seems to acquiesce her position and take her current sentence of servitude as her lot in life. She does, however, wish for a more exciting, appealing life. She questions herself several times within the story almost rhetorically asking, And what can one do? ,What is one to do?, and But what is one to do? She knows what she wants to do, but knows that it will never be possible for her to do. Though written by a male author, ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usherâ⬠also represents an important role for women, which in many ways contrasts that of the women in the aforementioned story, ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaper.â⬠In Edgar Allen Poeââ¬â¢s work, there seems to be a dawning of the day/evolving role of women from that of servitude and oppression to one of liberation and enlightenment. Madeline Usher, sister to the main character, Roderick Usher, serves as the face of the evolving role of women. Instead of sitting back and allowing the men of the society, as well as her brother push her around, Madeline uses her power to seemingly give herself a seat at the table of control. She even forces Roderick to seemingly have to depend on her! Ultimately, Madeline brings down Roderick, the house of Usher, and ends the Usher bloodline. This opposing view of women is quite different from other gothic fiction short stories. She seems to reject the stereotypical role of womenS how MoreRelatedThe Fall Of The House Of Usher And The Yellow Wallpaper1908 Words à |à 8 Pagesthis. The essays are related because Graff proposes the argument of academic work can be channeled through personal interests. Peacocke s essay provides an example of Graff s argument because she provides a remarkable piece of literature talking about the pros and cons of her favorite show Family Guy. I really enjoyed how Peacocke used examples from very comical moments in Family Guy like the Business instructional video in the 1950s that had some sexism on how to treat women in the workplace. She showed the negative impacts of the show like the protests of parents, but it was brought back two times after fans pressured Fox into reopening the show. Consoles and computers use a special chip that allows images to be applied on to the polygon. Then this allows a 3-D environment to be created and interacted with the characters. The game is then coded and the testing phase begins. Coding is what puts all the gaming elements together to work as one. Games are written based on C programming to generate the codes for the polygons to make the environment with the shadows and textures. Minority experience Free Essays
Attending a religious denomination which is exactly opposite to your belief is a new experience in my part. I am able to attend a Buddhist church. Its belief is on the teachings of Buddha. We will write a custom essay sample on Minority experience or any similar topic only for you Order Now According to Buddhism, liberation is attained through understanding and practice of the Four Noble Truths: 1. There is suffering in life. 2. Suffering is caused by desire for pleasure, existence, and prosperity. Suffering and rebirth cease when one ceases such desires, leading to enlightenment, or Nirvana, a blessed state in which peace, harmony, and joy are attained. 4. The way, or path, to Nirvana is the Eightfold Path, summarized as: Right understanding Right thoughts Right speech Right conduct Right occupation Right meditation Right mindfulness Right effort The Eightfold Path is also called the Middle Wayââ¬âbecause of its emphasis on avoiding such extremes as following sensuous pleasures on the one hand, and self-punishment on the other. The Buddhist must at all times observe the high moral principles described in the Eightfold path, which emphasizes nonviolence and the brotherhood of all. Perhaps the best-known Buddhist scriptures are the Tripitaka (ââ¬Å"Three Basketsâ⬠), first written down in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in authoritative edition was prepared by the Sixth Buddhist Council at Rangoon, Burma, in 1954-56. The three Pitakas are about four times as long as the Bible. In addition, according to one of the Buddhist believers say that there are two kinds of Buddhism and these are the Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. He said that Mahayana means ââ¬Å"large vehicle.â⬠It is a less austere system than Theravada Buddhism and emphasizes liberation for everyone. Many Mahayana Buddhists believe in liberation through good faith and good works. Their object is not only to obtain a personal Nirvana, but to help others to that goal. The Mahayana branch has developed a system of ideal Buddhas, or enlightened ones. The most important Buddha is the Amitaba, or Amida, Buddha, to whom members can appeal for deliverance. Some Mahana Buddhists also believe in a goddess, a symbol of compassion, who is called Kwan Yin in China and Kwannon in Japan. While the name Theravada means ââ¬Å"the way of the elders.â⬠It is an austere religion that requires solitude, meditation, and self-mastery through which each member hopes to achieve Nirvana. Because of these requirements, the possibility of liberation is limited to a few. Many of its followers are monks and nuns who spend most of their time in meditation and teaching. Theravada Buddhism is sometimes called ââ¬Å"Hinayana Buddhism,â⬠Hinayana meaning ââ¬Å"small vehicle,â⬠but this term is not accepted by followers of the religion. This experience widens my horizon regarding the Buddhist community.à It gives me the chance to internalize why such religion exists and there are people who remain faithful to the religion.
